About

Northwoods Lavender

Northwoods Lavender is a home-based farm located just north of Antigo, Wisconsin.

We were inspired to start this lavender farm to cultivate and share this useful plant with you. From the picturesque field to its calming fragrance to its sweet flavor, we personally love using it in and around our home. We’re sure you will too.

While lavender is new to us, farming is not. Our agricultural roots run deep and we have a passion for sustainable agriculture practices.

  • Soil and Water Conservation

Lavender is a drought tolerant plant requiring very little water once established. Breathable ground cloth is used to prevent erosion and weeds, and to allow soil to breathe.

  • Promoting Pollinators

Lavender is an ideal pollinator habitat which we further bolster by providing flowers and a water source to support a diversity of species.

  • No Chemical Fertilizers or Pesticides

Due to our close proximity to conventionally farmed fields, we are unable to seek organic certification. However we use no chemical fertilizers or pesticides within the boundary of our lavender field and compost whenever possible.

Lavender does not typically grow in our northern climate and will take a few years to fully mature. Follow us on social media and join our mailing list for sneak peeks at our blooming fields and exclusive farm updates as we grow!

Our Story

Rooted in Tradition, Reaching for Sustainable Solutions

Northwoods Lavender is a culmination of lifelong connections to agriculture and a shared vision for the future. We, Angel and Scott, were both raised in Bryant, Wisconsin, where rich farmland and agriculture roots run deep in our families.

Scott's experience in agriculture has been hands-on since childhood. From his early days working on his family's dairy farm until the cows were sold in 2020 to his near decade spent working on potato farms where he would eventually meet Angel, there was never any path explored for him except farming. Today, his role on a 6,500 acre grain farm allows him to apply his skills and knowledge while constantly seeking ways to promote sustainable practices such as reducing the amount of tillage abuse the ground gets, to minimizing chemical over use through targeted fertilizer application, and even exploring the possibilities of composting to promote natural soil biomes – these are challenges that excite him. Scott's passion for cultivating land goes beyond simply growing crops; it's about being outdoors and nurturing a healthy, natural soil environment. He also taps 1,000 of the family’s maple trees for sap each spring.

Angel's agricultural roots sprouted from her father's grassroots decision to transform his land into a thriving Christmas tree farm while she was growing up. Witnessing his dedication to quality trees instilled a deep respect for vision and potential in specialty crop farming. Today, she carries on this legacy, tending to thousands of Christmas trees of her own. She also worked her way through her high school and college years, at her grandparent’s potato farm, Wirz Inc.,  lending a hand during harvest and shipping seasons, but mostly nurturing her late grandmother's beautiful and immense flower gardens during the summers. While not initially drawn back to farming, the connection with Scott, the pull of family legacy, and the shared passion for a sustainable future for specialty crop farming ultimately led her back. She also owns Zarda Design, blogs her travels on Angel From Wisconsin, and adjunct instructs at Nicolet College.

Scott and Angel’s paths intertwined in 2011 amidst planting season at Wirz Inc. and spent the next decade exploring careers, traveling, and renovating their farmhouse. When the opportunity arose to purchase a one-acre plot bordering their home, they wanted to make use of it.

Northwoods Lavender isn’t just about growing lavender; it was about nurturing a community of sustainable farms in our agriculture-rich area. We aim to build a network of like-minded local businesses who share our values of environmental responsibility and supporting local initiatives. It’s a culmination of agricultural experience, a commitment to sustainable practices, and a vision for a vibrant future. By joining us on this journey, you support these values and help us continue the agriculture legacy, a cornerstone of our community.
